James Traub tells how Condi Rice went to Brent Scowcroft right before the war in Iraq, convinced that this was going to be a tremendous moment for American diplomacy, because they were going to bring democracy. Scowcroft said, "Condi, that's a great vision, but it's a multigenerational task." She said, "No, it's not. No, it's not. We succeeded in Eastern Europe. Look at these thriving democracies now. The same thing can happen in the Middle East." This is an excerpt from a Carnegie Council talk on October 7, 2008. For the full video, audio, and transcript, go to http://www.carnegiecouncil.org
