Helios Overture, Op. 17 (FS 32)
A 1903 concert overture by Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). Nielsen composed this work while staying in Athens with his wife, a sculptor who was working on reproductions of ancient art in the Acropolis Museum. Nielsen described this overture, which depicts the sun rising above the Aegean Sea, as follows: "Silence and darkness, The sun rises with a joyous song of praise, It wanders its golden way and sinks quietly into the sea."
