The piston rods on the Westinghouse Corliss steam engine are threaded into the crossheads, so in order to remove them either the crosshead or piston needs to be spun. We decided to turn the piston, and this video shows the process of turning the 54" dia. low pressure piston. I made the "socket" out of a piece of plate and a length of 10" pipe that I found in the plant. To provide the lift we are using a CM Loadlifter electric hoist that we found in the old pattern storage building. We got the piston rod unthreaded about 3" today, and there is probably still that much left to go.
