Joe Howell's path to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s was atypical. He was a southerner, from an upper middle-class family, and he was white. In his recent memoir "Civil Rights Journey," he discusses early childhood experiences which led him to a SNCC office in rural southwest Georgia. His experiences working there are told first-hand through journals he kept during that time which were recently recovered and edited by his wife Embry.
On November 10th, 2011 Joe and Embry discussed the book as part of a fundraiser for the Humanities Council of Washington, DC.
