According to tradition, the Haitian Revolution was initiated on 14 August 1791 when Dutty Boukman presided over a vodou ceremony that came to be known as Bois Caïman. The Haitians went on to defeat Napoleon's forces thanks to leaders such as Toussaint L'Ouverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines (both pictured towards the end of the short).
