Molecular and computational biologists develop new insights by gathering heterogeneous data from genomic databases and leveraging bioinformatics tools. The creation of G-nome Surfer was motivated by the issues experienced by biologists in using current bioinformatics tools to interpret, compare, annotate, share, and relate vast amounts of information and thus in forming hypotheses. G-nome Surfer was developed in close collaboration with domain scientists and provides a fluid interface employing direct manipulation to lower the threshold for using bioinformatics tools.
