A few words about dating: Trying to determine publishing dates of old video games more than thirty years later is often a hopeless task, but to retrace the rapid evolution of platform games we need a higher precision than just a year. Dates to the day are given as stated in official copyright claims, dates to the month usually originate in supplementary publications, previous works of research or the most commonly accepted dates in internet databases. Dates to the quarter are estimates based on contemporary magazine coverage. The more vague dates always appear at the end of their respective time frame, even if there is a higher probability of other titles having later release dates (e.g. "December" is listed before "Q4" but after "December 30th"). None of these sources are completely reliable, so please take the dates with a grain of salt.

Game footage used to support critical and historical commentary.
