In a new Development paper from Volume 144, Issue 8, Benjamin Martin and coworkers at Stony Brook University in New York investigate the induction of paraxial mesoderm in the zebrafish tailbud.

Using cell transplantation, inducible gene expression, expression analysis and cell tracking with photoconversion, the authors describe a unique mechanism of mesoderm induction, distinct from what happens during gastrulation.
