AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Richard Trumka announced his candidacy to replace John Sweeney—who is retiring as president of the labor federation—at a rally in Washington, D.C. on July 9.

Pledging to recruit millions of young workers into the labor movement, Trumka, in his firebrand style, said, Im running because I know, just like you, that even though it wasnt organized labor that created the God-awful mess our countrys in, we are the people who can lead America out of it!
