IMG * How Big are Solar Flares' Eruptions? (Share link: http://d.ro/bigeruption ) Note: Closed Captioning (CC - subtitles) avail. This brief entertaining and informative video answers the question!
The source video for this prominence eruption and associated M3.6 class flare comes from NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center/Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO): http://www.flickr.com/photos/gsfc/548... The clip was recorded over a period of 90 minutes in 24 second intervals. Per NASA: "This particular eruption was not directed toward Earth. If it were, the material released and its imprinted magnetic field might have triggered a geomagnetic storm, with bright auroras and the potential for disturbance in communications and electrical power networks."
