Lata Mangeshkar christened Madan Mohan 'The Emperor Of Ghazals'. She should know because it is in her voice that Madan Mohan created all those masterpieces that set an impossibly high standard for ghazals in films. Most of Madan Mohan's compositions were sung by heroines who were never quite top-rung. Two of his great compositions Woh Bhuli Dastaan and Badali se nikala hai chand from Sanjog and Bairan neend na aaye from Chacha Zindabad were picturised on Anita Guha. Enduring classics Hai Isi mein Pyaar ki Aabroo and Aap ki nazron ne samjha were shot on Mala Sinha and Bindu sang Jiya le gayo jee mora sawariya in Anpadh. Meri veena tum bin roye [Ameeta],Jab jab tumhe bhulaya and Kadam behake behake jiya [Minoo Mumtaz],Tu pyar kare ya thukaraye [Shubha Khote] are other few examples. The number of Madan's gems wasted on Priya Rajvansh is an indication of the saturnine misfortune that dogged him all his life. When the heroine was right, the film flopped. Nutan's Dulhan Ek Raat Ki with Sapnon mein agar and Maine rang li aaj chunariya was removed from theatres after just four days .Madan Mohan died of liver cirrhosis on 14 July 1975, but not before enthralling millions of Indians across the world with some of his memorable tracks .Here is a beautiful Lata solo from film 'Minister'- picturised on Roopmala.
