Most people have heard of Sage as a herb used in cooking. What many people don’t know is that it has many traditional and modern medicinal benefits. Check with a qualified doctor or herbal medicine practitioner before using sage medicinally.
The word Sage comes from the latin ‘salvos' meaning healthy to be saved. Its most common use today is as a culinary herb and for landscaping in gardens due to its attractive green leaves and distinctive scent. It is actually the largest member of the mint family (Lamiaceae) with nearly 1000 species of shrubs, herbaceous perennials, and annuals
Sage is also found growing wild in many parts of northern and southern America as well as in Europe. The best type for harvesting are the ones with blue pink and white flowers. You can spot these blooming flowers as much as twice per year. Sage herb can grow up to 4 foot high. The wild species often have a somewhat more faint scent than the cultivated types we are familiar with. You can gather during spring and early summer ideally to get the most health benefits but you can also use the leaves throughout the year and still get benefits.
For culinary and medicinal benefits the garden sage and white sage are best to use.
