http://stopwar.org.uk. "America is a friend of the Muslim world," says President Obama. So, how to explain the rage that erupted across the Arab world in response to an anti-Islam film produced in the United States?

There have been protests in over 20 countries, US embassies have been stormed and burned down, the American ambassador to Libya and three of his staff have been killed.

Was this really due only to a video which very calculatedly insults the Islamic faith in the crudest fashion, with the clear intention of provoking a militant reaction?

Or has it as much to do with over ten years of war, mass slaughter and destruction launched by the US and its allies in the Middle East and beyond - in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Libya and Somalia?

The answer is not to lecture the world, as Obama does, and make pious statements about the United States "working for the dignity and freedom that every person deserves".

For over one million victims of America's warmongering over the past decade, the only "dignity and freedom" they have got is that of the grave.

If the United States wants to build a relationship of trust with the Muslim and Arab world -- as Obama claimed to be seeking when he first took office in 2008 -- it can begin by stopping the endless wars it has been waging in Muslim countries, as Stop the War's John Rees spells out in this video.
