When Z invited me again to the party is was co-organizing somewhere near Lille, the State of the Art, I said yes immediately. I said yes because I had a little idea behind my head of trying to see how rusty I was with demomaking since our last joke release in 2002.

At that time I was playing a bit with OpenGL, it was a new technology for me and maybe I could do some fun stuff in 3D without having to write a complex engine to start with (Zone 512's imprint was still with me). So I quickly hacked together a little engine that could read .3ds file meshes and keyframing information. In 2 weeks time, I had something polished enough to try start assembling what would our new demo: Red. Red is a concept demo try to tell a story (really), the music is offbeat, the graphics are relaxed and weird, it was all about making something different... because it wasn't like I was going to code something that could compete with Cocoon or anybody else's engine...

Katana did great some graphics, textures and 3D scenes, it was really helpful. Freshair, a guy I meet on slsk, composed a nice experimental tune. I had something mostly working when leaving for the party place. I completed the music sync there.

Red ran flawlessly on the big screen and ranked honestly; the goal of the project, teaching myself OpenGL, was fulfilled.
