The USA is meant to be a society where people are free to express their beliefs and opinions as they see fit. Further, Americans are entitled to the right to self expression- often manifested through clothing and outer appearance. But while we value this right for ourselves, we often take a different view with "others." When someone falls outside of the types of self expression we expect, they fall subject to our judgement. We live in a country where you have the right to bare your skin or to cover it- both are equally viable options of being and neither is objectively better than the other. Yet, women on both sides of the coin are judged. We examine the case of a Saudi Muslim woman who covers her face, hair, and clothing with veil, hijab, and abaya. Her appearance may not appear "normal" to everyone, but underneath the abaya she is as normal as any of us and deserves the right to go throughout her life unmolested by stares, critic, or laughter. Those that believe in freedom should pay attention to our message of non judgement. We all should have the right to express ourselves, and our cultures, as we see fit.
