In this testimonial video, Animation Mentor graduate Mariya Kalachova breaks down her showcase shot.
Mariya explains that she wanted to create a shot about a child because she loves the sincerity and charm that a child embodies. The child in her showcase shot wears his heart on his sleeve — and the audience can easily read and connect with him. For video reference, Mariya began by watching videos of kids doing funny things on YouTube, but she found that the most useful help came from her mentors and the support she received from other students.
For example, mentor Kevin Koch helped Mariya to improve her body mechanics, specifically eye movement. During Class Six she focused primarily on improving this skill, and the results can be seen in her work. The feedback and tips influenced the decisions she made in her showcase shot.
Mariya now works at Sony Pictures Imageworks in Vancouver, with credits including the upcoming feature film The Smurfs.
