Here's a blast from the past. Found this among my old VCR tapes. This is the 1986-87 version of the El Camino Real High School Conquistadors Marching Band. This performance is from the Los Angeles Unified School District Band and Drill Team Finals in 1987, where we (yes, I was a band geek) placed first in our division and won "High Music" overall (I think...it was 20 years ago, who can remember?).
I think it's clear from the tape that we weren't very good marchers. We were definitely "musicians" first...we seemed to do a lot of standing around and playing, which was just fine by me.
If memory serves, the music was:
+ Man of LaMancha + Firedance (?) + It Don't Mean a Thing (If it Ain't Got That Swing) + Somewhere + Man of LaMancha (reprise...hastily transposed, too, I recall, hence the clunker notes in the fanfare) + Conquest (?)
Band Director was Michael Mertens, in his final year at ECR.
20 years ago...sheesh...
If you see yourself in the video, drop me a line or leave a comment!
And yes, those bell-bottoms were as ridiculous in '87 as they are in '07.
(Apologies for the crappy quality video. It's from a 20 year old VCR tape that was probably 2nd generation even then, recorded off of a pretty crappy VCR)
