Mayor Reads January episode is related to Edmonton’s sister city of Harbin, China.
These videos are one of the ways that Edmonton’s Mayor Don Iveson connects to community. As a father of 2 young children and a champion for literacy as well as our public library - he understands the value of sharing books. He has countless invitations to read to school groups but can't possibly accept them all. In an effort to “share our Mayor” and connect to children (and adults) through books we have created a project called Mayor Reads. We are so pleased to have the support of EPL for this project as they are happily “sharing” with the production and promotion of these videos. Monthly episodes are based on books which may be related to seasonal themes or city issues that would appeal to our intended audience of elementary students and families.

Emma’s Story was chosen for several reasons. Did you know that for 30 years now Edmonton has shared a special relationship with its sister city – Harbin, China? Just like the family who welcomed Emma in this story, our city welcomes people from all over the world.

Edmonton Public Library is a welcoming place as well. Whether you’re interested in learning more about Harbin or China or Chinese culture, maybe even your own family history or what the library has on offer for those new to Edmonton, any library staff at any branch can help you access world language materials and online language learning programs.
