UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup: Solo wins for Albert and Compton in Koksijde

Niels Albert and Katherine Compton rode to solo victories in the Belgian dunes of Koksijde during the third round of the UCI Patrick Cyclo-cross World Cup.

The new course was designed with a view to the UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in 2012. Albert (BKCP-Powerplus) won the race in the Elite Men's category ahead of World Champion Zdenek Stybar (Telenet-Fidea). However, Stybar remains in the lead of the World Cup standings. Meanwhile Compton (USA) won the Women's competition by a huge margin over the two Dutch competitors Daphny van den Brand and Sanne van Paassen. Van den Brand is the new leader of the World Cup series.

Men Elite -- First victory of the season for Albert

During the first half of the Elite Men's race, nine riders distanced the rest of the field on a course that was a mixture of sand and mud. In front of his home crowd, Niels Albert set up a decisive attack just before the halfway stage of the race. Despite counter-attacks from his compatriots Bart Wellens (Telenet-Fidea) and Sven Nys (Landbouwkrediet) the leader extended his lead during the remaining five laps of the hilly course. Albert cruised to his first victory of the season with half a minute over the first chasers. A late crash from Wellens allowed Stybar to take second place, with Nys riding into third place. On 230 points, Stybar has a 15 point lead over Albert (215) in the World Cup standings with third-placed Kevin Pauwels (Telenet-Fidea) a further 34 points back (181).

Women -- Van den Brand is the new leader

In the Women's race, US Champion Katherine Compton didn't offer the other riders any chance to get near victory, surging away from World Cup leader Van Paassen from the first lap. She finished the race on the runway of the Belgian Armed Forces in Koksijde with a gap of more than two minutes over her closest rivals. European and Dutch champion Van den Brand claimed second place ahead of Van Paassen which makes Van den Brand the new leader in the World Cup. Van den Brand holds a small margin of five points over Van Paassen and thirty points over Compton, who skipped the second round of the World Cup in Plzen, Czech Republic.

U23 and Juniors -- Belgian Domination

On Saturday morning the youth races were dominated by the Belgian riders. Vincent Baestaens (Belgium) won the first round in the Men Under 23 competition after a two-man sprint against Marcel Meier (Germany). European Champion Lars van der Haar (the Netherlands) finished third at four seconds from the leading duo. In the Men Juniors race the Belgians placed three men on the podium after Danny van Poppel (the Netherlands) and Quentin Jauregui (France) faded in the latter stages of the race. Laurens Sweeck was in a league of his own and won with a gap of more than 50 seconds over Daniel Peeters, who sprinted faster than Laurens' twin brother Diether Sweeck.

The next round of the UCI Patrick Cyclo-cross World Cup will be held in Kalmthout, Belgium, on December 19th.
