On the 22nd of July 2017, Youth Defence staged one of their Road Shows in Kilkenny City. Within 10 minutes, they were shocked to see two burly guys come along and take two of their boards and put them in a car and drive off! They were told they were Garda detectives.
What was done was clearly unlawful and contrary to a ruling of the European Court of Human Rights. Indeed, under Article 40 3 2 of Bunreacht na hEireann it states: "The State shall, in particular, by its laws, protect as best it may from unjust attack and, in the case of injustice done, vindicate the life, person, good name, and property rights of every citizen." Youth Defence was also vindicating the right to life of the unborn under Article 40 3 3 which the State is constitionally obliged to uphold.
These are idealistically law abiding young people who are volunteering their time, and forgoing financial rewards, to defend the most vulnerable in our human community -the living but not yet born! They are not involved in petty crimes, alcohol abuse, drugs etc. Indeed the Gardai should be holding them up as an example to other youths! In contrast, their opponents are inciting others to hatred, violence and feticism. One would have thought the Gardai at this time (Sgt McCabe, Templemore etc.) would be craving to improve their reputation with the public? If they behave this way at this time what will they be like if an abortion referendum takes place? Freedom of speech, conscience rights and democracy are at stake!!
