Joan Humphreys, the grandmother of Dundee soldier Kevin Elliott who was killed in Afghanistan has been campaigning against the illegal war in Afghanistan. She joined the Scottish Socialist Party on 28th November 2009 largely because of the SSP's anti-war stance although she had already been in agreement with the SSP's progressive policies for some time. Since then she and SSP co-convenor Colin Fox have teamed up in their campaigning and spoken at lots of public meetings together. This video is of Joan's speech at a public meeting in Glasgow's Hillhead library earlier this year. Although she has lost her grandson, she doesn't blame the Afghan people who are just standing up against an illegal invasion by the west. She lays the blame squarely on the UK government for entering this illegal war, started by America, which is not about protecting Britain from terrorism but about profit. In another video, recent general election candidate for the SSP James Nesbitt mentioned how people had almost forgotten about the war in Afghanistan which started at the end of 2001 because America and therefore Britain had switched its focus onto attacking Iraq (another case where a forgotten war had been going on for years, since 1990, with DU shells being used by the west and causing cancer in civilians and ground troops.) In each case a pretext was used for the invasion and bombing of those two oil-rich and strategically useful areas of the world. 9/11 was used as the pretext for attacking Afghanistan despite the fact that not one Afghan citizen was involved. Most of the hijackers were Saudi Arabian, but the Saudi rulers already give America cheap oil, so no need to invade Saudi Arabia then. There is also much evidence to suggest that the US government and the corporations that sponsor and control America had inside foreknowledge of the impending attacks and did not do much to prevent it happening (but the owner of the twin towers took out insurance on the buildings 2 weeks earlier whilst other high-up politicians and friends quickly sold their shares in airlines.) Under the pretext of avenging the victims of terrorism, they invaded Afghanistan, a geo-politically useful spot on the border with several countries and well as being on the route of a planned pipeline. As we know, news of the war died down until the increase in insurgency in Helmand province, in which many working-class young soldiers, drawn from areas of high unemployment in Britain, have died, not to mention the countless numbers of Afghan civilians.
