Howe Gelb
from 'Lull Some Piano' [2001]

http://owomrecords.com/archives/29

The title Lull Some Piano is very accurate. First, this is a collection of unformed, nascent piano pieces composed by Giant Sand main man Howe Gelb at various places on his travels (as is his wont). Up at Harv's house in Tucson; Liddy's living room in London; home on the old piano after lugging it into the room with cement floors instead of the wooden floored one. Second, this album is merely a musical interlude between Howe's other projects, a lull in his gentle storm of creativity, an insight into some of the fragments he's been incorporating into Giant Sand songs for almost 10 years now. The 19 segments here don't even have titles--instead the words next to the song numbers read vertically to make a statement. Still, this is Gelb and thus there is much to explore here among the odd echoed thump of drum and off-mic vocals and ever-resonant piano chords, carefully picked over, redolent of classical, honky-tonk and jazz. Like instrumental music behind a drifting film of changing landscapes, the moods change infinitesimally--always melancholy, introspective and never lees than charming. Lull is just another fine Gelb album then, albeit one that doesn't possess recognisable "songs". --Everett True
