Today's Script:

It's December 14th, on today's show...

Splash Damage today released the first gameplay trailer for its new FPS Dirty Bomb and, as you might expect, it does look an awful lot like the class-based, objective-driven antics of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Brink. The gameplay footage from Dirty Bomb's London Bridge map shows escorting vehicles, building and detonating barriers, class skills, and Splash Damage hallmarks. In a blog post Splash Damage said, "Dirty Bomb must provide a balanced playing field and a fair contest, challenging players, against or alongside real people. Players should only succeed by competing in battles where skill and tactics alone determine the winners, be it as an individual, group of friends, or team," "Players should always understand why they won or lost, or by being part of a social community that shares knowledge, continually learn from other player's skills, and achieve status and recognition for their own credible successes and contributions." All of this sounds good figuratively. But you have to have a huge and unique community for all of these objective/ team based games to work. Definitely a tall order for Splash Damage.

The App Store has been updated with a "Best of 2012" feature, which declares Apple's picks for the best content throughout iTunes. According to the Cupertino electronics giant, you should be listening to Frank Ocean while watching Breaking Bad. You should also be playing Rayman Jungle Run, its pick for iPhone Game of the Year. Citing "stellar control and stunning graphics," the $2.99 platformer ran away with Apple's top award. The iPad Game of the Year goes to The Room, a puzzling mystery with 3D graphics for $1.99. The runner-up is the $4.99 Waking Mars action/adventure game that lets gamers explore the red planet and interact with aliens.

Much to many gamers chagrin, the trend amongst survival horror genre has been to ramp up the action and ramp down the survival and the horror. Dead Space didn't buck the trend with it's second installment, which has many skeptical about viscerals announcement that Dead Space 3 would include co-op. In Shack's Dead Space 3 preview Visceral explains that they are aware of this and making a concious effort to not go the way of the Resident Evil franchise. "We definitely learned a lot from Resident Evil 5," said a Visceral representative at the event. "The most important thing we learned was to not use AI partners, because otherwise you're never alone, and you lose the atmosphere and the sense of fear." Shack's Kat Baily wrote the preview for DS3 and is optimistic, "The best thing that can be said about Dead Space 3 is that it continues to look ahead, take risks, and further the overall franchise. It would have been easy enough for Visceral to make another single-player survival game set among the stars, but it's clear that this team is looking for a challenge. So far, they've been more been more than equal to it. The game is scheduled for release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 5.
