The credentialing marketplace is an expanding and confusing maze. Unclear credentialing information makes it hard for education systems to communicate their graduates’ knowledge and skills to other institutions, employers, and even to students. The result is missed connections and opportunities both inside and outside the classroom as well as an increased difficulty for students to effectively identify and navigate the path that is right for them.

Dr. Ken Sauer, Senior Associate Commissioner and Chief Academic Officer, and Jillian Scholten, Director of Academic Affairs at the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, discuss how Indiana has participated as the first state scale-up and is working toward the goal of bringing transparency and credential literacy to the marketplace through technology.

Emilie Rafal, Operations and Programs Manager for Credential Engine, and Lisa Lutz, President, Chief Executive Officer for Solutions for Information Design have been crucial to the development of Credential Engine. Rafal and Lutz highlights how Credential Engine’s common credentialing language and centralized data registry creates a new paradigm where all types of credential data—from diplomas to badges and military training—can be easily collected, connected, communicated, and compared across all types of education or workforce systems.
