Gunkanjima (Hashima) is an abandoned island located about 15 km from shore of Nagasaki. It was a coal mining island with the amazing high-rise buildings since 1887, the highest population density worldwide ever recorded in 1959. The island was closed in 1974 but the abandonded buildings including school, hospital, apartment & even shrine are still hauntedly existing. To get there, catch a ferry to Takashima from Nagasaki port (next to JR Nagasaki station). At Takashima, hire a fisher boat and cruise for 2 minutes. Entry to the island comes with a condition of 30 days sentense in Nagasaki prison. * April 2009: Tourists are allowed to visit Gunkanjima via authorized travel agents' organising group tours.
