Machik's Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) is a unique enrichment program that offers Tibetan students from Chungba and other Tibetan rural areas a dynamic and stimulating learning environment for four weeks every summer. This one-of-a-kind program is a key part of Machik's success in its community-based education initiative in Chungba.

This year, Machik assembled an exceptional team of international, Tibetan and Chinese volunteer teachers to provide access to language training as well as art, music, sports, science classes, and educational field trips.

SEP 2009 was held in Chengdu, Sichuan.

A total of 51 students (14 boys and 37 girls) joined SEP this summer. Their schooling ranged from primary level to college. They included over 20 young women from the Mother's Wish program, 12 students from the Chungba Middle School, as well as students from Gyarong, Nyarong, Lhasa, Jyekundo, Ngawa (Aba), Songpan, Rebgong and other parts of Amdo. The 2009 SEP volunteer teachers included graduate students from Southwest University for Nationalities (Chengdu), undergraduate students from Cornell University, and high school students from Appleby College in Ontario, as well as individuals from other areas of China, the US, and Canada.

SEP 2009 included special guest lecturers from different professional backgrounds -- educators, professors, business people, health professionals -- who spoke to the Tibetan students about their professions and career development. Highlights included Hashi Tashi Dorje of Snowland Great Rivers Environmental Protection Association, and Fang Xin of AIDS Alliance China, who gave a presentation on HIV/AIDS awareness.
