It was the bloodiest and most mysterious battle of the Second World War in Italy. In Ortona, a small seaside town in the Abruzzo region, they literally fought street by street, house by house, even room by room. Hitler himself ordered that Ortona be defended to the last man. While newspapers in the allied countries described the battle in epic tones and Stalin himself wanted to know what was really happening in Ortona. And yet until this day no one has been able to fully answer a simple and logical question: why? Why did everyone want to conquer Ortona in December 1943? What was so important about it? And why was it forgotten so quickly afterwards? What embarrassing secret does Ortona hide until this day? During the fighting, deadly explosive traps were used and terrifying "annihilation zones" were created. The special Falschirmjager squad, the German paratroopers, the famous "green berets", faced young volunteers from far-off Canada in a battle of terrible ferocity, while thousands of civilians remained trapped. Amazing library footage restored in high definition, never before heard eyewitness accounts, documents that have remained secret until now, German photographs recently found and shown for the first time, astonishing computer reconstructions and moving re-enactments help us to relive not only the political and military climate of the time, but take us back to the narrow alleys of the time, standing side-by-side with the soldiers. In the middle of the dust and the screaming, we relive a battle of mediaeval fury, of hand-to-hand combat, until in the end we discover the embarrassing truth that has remained hidden for over half a century. The shocking solution to the enigma of Ortona also throws a sinister light on the wars of today and the dangerous interweaving of politics, war and news.
