Footwork is essential, anyone could throw a punch, but without the right footwork, you wont be able to work your way in, or work your way out, witch is most important. *Its very importiant that when you step to your right, you shouldnt cross your left leg over your right. In this video, I do cross my leg quite a bit; Lots of coaches do tell you not to!. But If you watch close, I'm moving outwards at the same´╗┐ time that I'm moving to my right, so you won't get hit with a right cross. I'm moving my legs that way so I can gain speed in my movement as I go to my right, but again, its very important to move outward as you move to your right. (think of it this way, when you watch pro fighters, you see them do alot of things that your trainer or coach will tell you not to do at the gym. For instance keeping your hands up or bringing your left hand back in before throwing the right.) What this shows you is that us experienced fighters, that have been doing this for many years are more relaxed and confident, therefore when we are in the ring we tend to relax our left hand lower than the right and do certian things that some coaches and trainers will tell you not to do. For that being said, when you step to your right, do not cross your left leg over your right so that you are not off balance. If you watch the video closely, I am not stepping, im moving ourwards and to the right at a fast pace - avoiding my opponents right hand. Its always safer to pivot to your left first- and then step OUTWARDS to your right. If you watch alot of great fighters out there like Mohammed Ali that have great footwork, you will see them have the same fast pace movement when your going to your right. Its very importiant when you go to your right, you go outwards at the same time, not straight across, so you stay away from your opponents right cross. Its importiant in training that you do not cross your legs, so you learn the proper technique! Think of it this way, no matter how many punches you throw, your legs are always fresh. Doing these exercises, will build muscle memory and balance. It will teach your body how to multi-task and work together. Control makes pro.
