So we have a release date and a possible logline for Marvel's upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy┬Şbut up until now no director. According to The Hollywood Reporter though, the studio may have found their man to take the Marvel Universe into space.

Director James Gunn is reportedly the top pick to helm the project...and a look at his credits not only suggests he could be the right man for the job, but also gives us clues to what kind of movie Guardians of the Galaxy will be....and possibly even who could be joining the cast in a lead role.

Gunn already has experience working in the superhero and sci-fi realms. He directed 2010's Super starring Rainn Wilson as an everyman, who decides to transform into a superhero in order to take down the drug dealer who stole his wife. Not a huge success as it was overshadowed by the similar, but more successful Kick-Ass released the same year. He also directed 2006's sci-fi, comedy, horror flick Slither about a small town overrun by an alien plague that turns the residents into monsters. That film was also a box office flop, but definitely gives us an idea of the direction Marvel is looking to take for the film.

In addition to the director, one other thing both films have in common are the fact that they starred the one...the only and my true nerd crush Nathan Fillion. A
lot of fans have wanted the Serenity star to take on the role of Ant-Man, which he has said he is not interested in doing, but perhaps Fillion could reunite with Gunn for Guardians in the role of astronaut Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord? Or maybe even the voice of Rocket Raccoon?

Though Gunn is reportedly the top pick to direct the film, the studio is also considering Yes Man director Peyton Reed and It's Kind of a Funny Story directing team of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. All the directors have comedy backgrounds, so we can expect Guardians of the Galaxy to have some comedic elements. Something that helped make The Avengers such a success.

Guardians of the Galaxy is set to hit theaters on August 1st, 2014. The Avengers director Joss Whedon is expected to have a hand in the film as part of his exclusive deal with Marvel. So do you think James Gunn has what it takes to bring the Guardians to the big screen or is there another director you think would be a better choice?
