Café Con Pan music ensemble ( www.cafeconpan.ca ). As I missed out on the October 2010 Day of the Galleon festivities in Las Filipinas on account of living too far away in Canada to attend, I was delighted to be invited by a friend to watch a small band from Veracruz, México perform some of their traditional folk music. This music ensemble, Café Con Pan was doing some fund raising for their city of Veracruz who are still struggling to recover from natural disasters. Veracruz was a link in the 250 year old Galleon trade between Las Filipinas, México and Spain. Consumer products and silver from Manila would be put on galleons and sail to the port of Acapulco and from Acapulco some of the products would be unloaded and sent to México city and to Veracruz. In Veracruz some of the products and silver would be loaded on to ships bound for Spain. This lucrative Galleon trade helped to shape the cultures of Las Filipinas, México, other Hispanic countries and made Spain a wealthy country indeed. It also made Las Filipinas very prosperous, that's why it was considered the pearl of the Spanish Empire in Asia "Perla de Oriente". From Spain and México came many contributions that helped to shape the hispanic culture of Las Filipinas. That culture exists to this day....minus the Spanish language as an official language unfortunately. As I listened and watched this wonderful group showcase their lively music I couldn't help but be reminded of my Filipino Hispanic heritage that was brought over and developed by Spain, México and Filipinos themselves. I and others that are like minded can only hope that it will continue to survive, revive and thrive.
