PMC Loudspeakers (Luton, UK) are known as the brand of choice for music and movie mastering studios all over the world. On 18th September, the BB5 XBD-A reference system was installed at Unilet Sound & Vision in New Malden, Surrey (their number one dealer in the UK) who specialize in PMC's more domestic and home friendly products. That's not to say that these speakers are not attainable for the home. At £58,00 you get the two speakers which are each comprised of two cabinets. The top section is the BB5 itself, whilst the XBD (Extra Bass Driver) cabinet is located undereath. The 'A' suffix refers to the system being 'Active'. Rather than using a standard (passive) crossover inside the speaker cabinet (which can cause distortion and hinder the speaker's performance), the Pre-Amp signal is fed into a powered Bryston 10B Active Crossover. The crossover then has three separate outputs for Bass, Mid and Treble which can be adjusted manually to suit the acoustics of the room the speakers are placed in. The three outputs (per speaker) are then sent to approximately 6 Kilowatts of Bryston amplification). 1kW to each Bass driver, and 400w to the mid-range and huge 34mm tweeters. Using the Bryston BCD-1 as a source, the end result can only be truly appreciated first-hand. The microphone on an iPhone 4 can only take so much SPL. This video was shot on the 17th September 2010 prior to the open day at Unilet (which was a great success). The music used is from the film Inception by Hans Zimmer. I'm a huge movie-music fan and I thought it would be appropriate to play this as many film scores are mixed and mastered using the BB5 XBD-A. James Newton Howard as a pair...why don't you? :-p
