After spending some time in Xinping's old town, guide Mark took us to a nearby fishing village by car for lunch (the least said about that the better) and then we walked down to the shore where a bamboo raft waited for a ride on the Li River.

This motorized "raft" traveled upstream for 30 minutes before turning back for the 40 minute ride to a docking point. The omnipresent smog kept many of the scenic karst sights along the Li from being terribly impressive. Large, two-decker boats with small kitchens out back used for tourist groups were more interesting.

There are over 1,680 bamboo rafts according to our guide and who knows how many single and double decker large boats! If you have time for only one river around Guilin, make it the Yulong River!
