The Democratic and Republican candidates met in Boston for the first of three presidential debates sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates. The candidates stood at separate podia and answered questions selected by a single moderator.
The candidates did not question each other directly, but were able to respond to each other's statements. Much of the debate focused on Social Security and tax cuts, but included questions on Yugoslavia, Supreme Court justices, abortion, and education.
