CEPR CO-Director, Mark Weisbrot spoke on a panel on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's asylum to Ecuador, organized by the American Enterprise Institute on September 18, 2012. Joined by Gustavo Palacio, president of Democracy International Ecuador, José Cárdenas of Cárdenas Strategic Solutions, and moderator Roger Noriega, of the American Enterprise Institute, Mark spoke about the decision by Ecuador to grant political asylum to Julian Assange on the basis of a well-founded fear of persecution by the United States government if he were to be extradited to Sweden. He also countered the unsubstantiated attacks on Ecuador's record of human rights and press freedoms that have circulated in the media.
