Reason for Nomination: Hand in Hand with the Mafia: the Swiss energy corporation Repower is building a hard-coal fired power plant in Calabria, Italy, despite the opposition of the local population. The planned site lies at the very heart of the dominion of the `Ndrangheta Mafia, Italy's and probably Europe's most influential organized crime alliance. Repower will have to do business with the Mafia, or might already be doing business.
The company's determination to go ahead with the project has already led to a „Repower-Act", a law enacted by former Prime Minister Berlusconi that robs the regions of their freedom of choice for the sole benefit of Repower. Although the population of Calabria is against the construction of the power plant, they no longer have a democratic way of stopping the project. Repower deliberately hooked up with corrupt politicians and the Mafia in order to build an unwanted, both socially and environmentally unsustainable coal-fired power plant.
