Eric Unger, an openly gay student at Illinois University, as jumped by a group of teenagers and beaten so badly he had to have his jaw wired shut. Unger believes this was a hate crime because of the homophobic slurs his attackers yelled at him. The Police Department disagrees. Who's right? John Iadarola and Kim Horcher discuss on TYT University.

Do you believe this was a hate crime? Is this an indication that homophobia is still a big problem in America? Or is it possible the homophobic slurs were unrelated to his sexuality? Does it even matter? This was clearly a terrible, brutal attack - how important is the hate crime label?
