This week I’m making my own black powder at home! Combining Potassium Nitrate (75%) with Charcoal (15%) and Sulfur (10%) gives us a nice, slow-burning black powder! I have some big plans for this homemade black powder, but I’m saving that awesome-ness for another video. Make sure you hit that subscribe button, if you haven’t already. Thanks for watching and I’ll catch you guys next time. Oh, and PLEASE do NOT try this at home! Mixing black powder can be rather dangerous!

The Science Pirate’s DIY Black Powder (A nice, slow-burning black powder):
Potassium Nitrate (Saltpeter) – 40g (75% by weight)
Charcoal – 8g (15% by weight)
Sulfur – 5.3g (10% by weight)

Please note: particle size is critical to the burn rate! Smaller particles = faster burn. Larger particles = slower burn. So the amount of grinding / pulverization will greatly affect the speed with which the black powder burns. I didn’t grind the powders as fine as possible, which results in a black powder that burns vigorously, but at a slower rate. You’ll see why this is important soon…

UPDATE: I have another video about making Black Powder WITHOUT sulfur! https://youtu.be/BJ2VAKvizjE
