Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson is standing down.

His announcement came on the first official day of general election campaigning.

He insists the decision was "personal, not political", despite often being at odds with his party's leadership.

Former Labour adviser Tom Baldwin tells Newsnight Watson had “human reasons” for wanting to step back, but Independent candidate Gavin Shuker - a former Labour MP - said some moderate Labour candidates would be feeling “abandoned”.
