7 years ago today (June 11, 2016), I began shooting video documentation of Ottawa’s amazingly DIY punk rock festival, the Gaga Weekend (which has naturally evolved into today’s just as amazing Ottawa Explosion Weekend).
At the time, I would never have guessed that I would actually shoot every single band (27 over 72 hours). But with the help from second-camera operators Dave Williams, Jessica Gilmore, Brandi Boulet, Alex Thurston, and Emmanuel Sayer, I was able to pull together a more-or-less cohesive account of the entire weekend, in all it’s raucous glory.
The sound is rough and the images are raw, but they both culminate into this tight-knit, fast-paced, 46min time capsule of the Ottawa punk scene at the time. And as much as I love the live performances, my favourite moments of this film are the candid images of the people that make up the community itself. May it continue to thrive.
