On Saturday April 9, 2016, Norfolk & Western Class J 611 led NS ES44AC 8099, SOU FP7 6133, and 21 passenger cars on a round-trip excursion between the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC and Kemper Street Station in Lynchburg, VA, called 'The Virginian'. With a scheduled departure time of 7:00am, it was an early morning for both riders and chasers.
Our small convoy started out at the Yadkin River Bridge at the south end of Linwood Yard, then continued north, capturing the train (running as NS 958) in Jamestown, Reidsville, Danville, Altavista, and Lynchburg, where a massive crowd of locals welcomed the J in many different ways.
After a long layover and late departure, we captured the train (running as NS 957) working hard to make up time on the return trip south at CP Durmid in Lynchburg, Lawyers Station, Gretna (http://www.railpictures.net...
- not in video), CP Bentley in Danville, and Brown Summit (too dark to include).
All locations are labeled in the video, so it shouldn't be too hard to follow along. My video from the next day's Spencer-Asheville round-trip 'Blue Ridge Special' will be up soon.
