When Seamus lost the use of his left hand he couldn't believe that the useless thing that hung from his arm belonged to him. Then he named his cramped fingers after the members of his boyhood family so that he could get to know them again. A powerful song from Stroke Odysseys performed as part of Derry-Londonderry's City of Culture 2013. Show less

  • The Mariners - A Rosetta Life Musical Play all

The Mariners is a musical by Orlando Gough and Rosetta Life written with four women who attend Hospice in the Weald, Greenwich & Bexley Cottage Hospice, and Marie Curie Edenhall. Developed from the drama-documentary Lifestories (see Playlist of that name) The Mariners tells the intertwined stories of their encounters with illness.
Previewed as a Musical Work in Progress at the Rosetta Live! Festival in July 2004, The Mariners was presented as part of Greenwich Theatre Musical Futures festival of musical theatre in 2006 and toured hospices and studio theatres Autumn 2008. It now awaits funding for completion.
Orlando Gough's score is performed by his charismatic acapella choir, The Shout, with a libretto developed by Lucinda Jarrett and Chris Rawlence from the writing and experiences of Muriel Kindler, Jennie Humm, Glassine Greene and Collette Waller.
Beginning with diagnosis, the story takes the audience on the roller coaster ride of life-threatening illness - the fears and the pain, but also the laughter, exhilaration, and understanding.
Pulling no punches, The Mariners is a remarkable exploration of the durability and fragility of life, in the tenacious words of those who are actually fighting for it.
