We are Music Theatre Wales. Here's a flavour of the experiences we create through our operas - telling stories that speak of the world we live in through bold, emotional and powerful storytelling with music and theatre. Think opera. Think again.
This playlist will feature a number of short films offering some insight into the creation of our new production Passion, the highly acclaimed dance-opera by Pascal Dusapin, seen widely across Europe but never before in the UK. Throughout September 2018, we'll be capturing footage and interviews with cast and creative team to give you window into how the production is developing and growing in the rehearsal room at the Dance House in Cardiff.
Passion is a new co-production with National Dance Company Wales, performed in collaboration with leading contemporary music specialists London Sinfonietta and EXAUDI, which will tour across Wales and England in Autumn 2018.
In this searingly beautiful and sensuous work for voice and body Dusapin explores the pain and passion of two lovers who are forced apart to separate worlds. Springing from the myth of Orpheus, it offers an intriguing contemporary take – she is the one who wants to be followed. Mixed with the haunting sounds of harpsichord and Arabic Oud, Dusapin’s gleaming, shifting score, performed by the London Sinfonietta, conveys a timeless world within which the movement of dancers and singers can play out their story of loss and desire.

Set in a restaurant found in any city anywhere, The Golden Dragon is a compelling fable of modern life. At the heart of this tale, is the discovery of a decayed tooth in a bowl of soup. It belongs to a kitchen boy, a long way from home and with no papers. He’s looking for his sister, but she’s been forced into a very different kind of service just next door…
Funny and shocking in equal measure, this brilliant new opera poignantly captures the horrors of too many lost lives.
“Music Theatre Wales’s performance is exemplary in its clarity and simplicity. The pacing is masterly, as is the passage from two-dimensional cartoon-like farce to resonant human tragedy: I began being baffled and amused, but I ended up haunted and moved.” The Telegraph

By Guto Puw and Gwyneth Glyn Based on the play by Gwenlyn Parry
Y Tŵr explores the extremes of emotion experienced by two lovers over the course of a lifetime together, journeying from youth to old age, from love to despair, from desire to disillusionment.
Composer Guto Puw and singer-songwriter-playwright Gwyneth Glyn breathe new life into Gwenlyn Parry’s disturbing and provocative play. The result is an intense and intimate story of love and life based on the work of one of Wales’ most important playwrights, reimagined in new form as a touching and lyrical Welsh language chamber opera.
