This is a sketch of the basic core for a song I thought up. It was recorded live in a single take (no overdubs or edits).
Pedals and their settings (mostly for my own reference in case I want to expand this idea on an album later):
- Walrus Audio Mayflower: Level @ 1:30, Gain @ 9, Bass @ 3, Treble @ 1:30
- Strymon El Capistan: Time @ ~11, Mix @ max (to start), Tape Age @ 3, Wow @ max, Repeats @ noon, Fixed mode C
- Strymon Flint: Verb Mix @ 1:30, Verb Color @ 9:30, Verb Decay @ 1:30, 70's mode
- Boomerang III Phrase Sampler: Free Sync mode, Volume 1 @ 4 (to start), Volume 2 @ 6 (to start), Volume 3 @ 7 (to start), Yellow Tap @ Stack, Green Tap @ Reverse, Green Hold @ Fade, Fade Time @ ~3
Performance notes (again, for my own use):
Tuning low to high is CGCGCE.
Start with only Mayflower on, neck single coil pups. Sample the main riff to Loop 3; engage auto-stack so the strings ringing out at the end of the riff don't get cut off. Switch on El Cap and record delay drone to Loop 1 (again use auto-stack to go straight into stacking on that loop). Cut stacking, switch off El Cap, switch on Flint Verb, lay down simple lead thingy in Loop 2 (auto-stack again). Cut stacking, switch off Flint Verb, and slowly fade out Loop 2 manually with the knob. Once Loop 2 is silent, cut it and put the volume back to 6. Slowly turn down Loop 1 volume to 3 and Loop 3 volume to 6. Play along with the main riff until you can seamlessly turn off Loop 3 and continue playing the riff it had; this way the last notes of that riff can ring out for a second before moving on to the next section.
Switch on Flint Verb and play the somber riff, not worrying about keeping time with the loops because at this point only the ambient droney loop is still playing. On the last note of the somber riff section, hold the Rang's green button to auto-fade Loop 1, then hold the yellow rang button to erase all the loops (while continuing to play the transition chords here).
Switch off Flint Verb and sample strummy riff to Loop 3. Switch off Mayflower, switch pickup to neck humbucker, and sample bass line thing to Loop 2 (auto-stack to layer a harmony). Now switch Mayflower, El Cap and Flint Verb on, switch to bridge humbucker pup, and sample little ambient thing to Loop 1. Quickly turn Volume 1 back up to 6 before the loop starts playing, but also use auto-stacking to layer a harmony on there. Cut stacking, switch off Flint Verb, tap tempo to El Cap if needed, switch to neck humbucker pup, and play the bouncy lead. After 4 times, cut Loop 1. 4 more times then cut Loop 2. 4 more times, then tap green Rang button then Loop 1 to play Loop 1 back in reverse. 4 more times then let lead ring out. Switch off El Cap, switch to neck single coil pup, strum along with strummy riff, then turn off Loop 3 while seamlessly picking up its riff. Hold green rang button to auto-fade Loop 1 while playing transition chords, then the whole outro is just played live.
