This mural is the largest scale I’ve ever worked in. It is also the most personal. This is my neighborhood; my wife and I live a half a block away. This mural is an expression of my experiences within the neighborhood’s transformation.
These heart flowers represent the continuing growth of us as humans on this earth, as well as the growth of the Creative Culture of Grand Rapids over the past 10 years. It is my sincere hope that they inspire everyone to greater involvement within our community.
Respect these old buildings, respect what has happened and what is happening here. Artprize is a great seed being planted. Our continued excited involvement will be the sunlight and water that sustain it. This is just one forgotten strip; together we can beautify this city. We have the power to continue to make it a wonderful place to be.
While you are here, I hope you explore deeper into the neighborhood. There is so much creativity occurring just below the surface.
We’re all connected to the same things. Through art we can take our buildings and communities back.
