Highlights from “LIC & Astoria Love Letter,” a storytelling event celebrating the neighborhoods of Long Island City, Astoria, and Queensbridge in Western Queens.
Now the site of the hottest real estate market in Queens, Long Island City and Astoria are more than beer gardens and desirable properties with Manhattan views. "LIC & Astoria Love Letter" put the spotlight on the community that existed in Western Queens before luxury towers changed the waterfront, with performances of true life stories about growing up in Long Island City, Astoria, and Queensbridge from five notable community members who lived in the neighborhood before it was “discovered” and loved it before it was “cool": Louie “KR.ONE” Gasparro, Jim Hawkins, Gary Lucero, Yvette Ramirez, and Roxanne Shante.
This event took place on June 24, 2017, at Socrates Sculpture Park.
"LIC & Astoria Love Letter" is a storytelling program that shared neighborhood love through true stories about growing up in LIC, Astoria, and Queensbridge, and discussed the changes and challenges that residents face, in particular gentrification and displacement.
