The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse is a science-based organization focused on developing effective solutions to address the disease of addiction and risky substance use. It was founded in 1992 by Joseph A. Califano, Jr., former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare.
What We Do

More than 1 in 7 Americans ages 12 and older have addiction involving nicotine, alcohol or other drugs. The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse works to:
• Close the enormous gap between what we know about addiction and what we actually do to prevent and treat it
• Incorporate addiction prevention and treatment into routine health care and medical practice
• Explore the possibility of finding a cure
The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse is committed to understanding the science of addiction and its implications for health care, public policy and public education.
