"Cardiff University Students’ Union is a central hub for our students to socialise, rest, study and more. There are around 2,400 Muslim students in total.
For over 5 years, Muslim students have campaigned for better facilities to practise their faith in the Students’ Union and University as a whole. On November 23rd, the Islamic Society proposed a Motion “Muslim Students to be better facilitated in the Students’ Union” in the Annual General Meeting. There were 650+ students in attendance and the motion was passed, but unfortunately, so far little progress has been made.
Currently, there is a very small multi-faith prayer room on 3rd floor with no ablution facilities. The students either have to keep their wudu that they have done at home or use the normal toilet basins. This leads Muslim students to be put in awkward and uncomfortable situations. Definitely, there is a huge need for bigger prayer room facilities and ablution facilities to be installed in the Students’ Union.
In response to this, we are proposing to build a new multi-faith prayer room on the 4th floor of the Students’ Union and to incorporate two ablution facilities in the 43.8m2 space. The total cost of this development is up to £58,000. We have already fundraised £5,252 and Cardiff University Students’ Union is funding £5,000."
