Recently I travelled with my X100F to Belfast, Northern Ireland where I challenged my own assumptions about street photography needing to strictly document reality as it is. I explore the question: What’s the difference between street photography and photojournalism?
Belfast was ravaged by the Troubles, a conflict that split the city apart between Catholics who wanted a united Ireland and Protestants who wanted to be loyal to the United Kingdom.
As you can imagine, the Troubles were well documented through photojournalism from the 1970s to the 1990s, when it ended officially through the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
Now, 21 years later, in a very different Belfast, I take my trusty Fujifilm X100F and explore the modern — and peaceful — streets of Belfast, through a different kind of lens: street photography.
Unlike photojournalism, which is newsworthy, street photography can be executed for the pure joy of satisfying a creative curiosity.
It was through this lens that I ventured out into the streets of Belfast.
Great street photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier, and Robert Doisneau, knew how to capture everyday reality in artful ways.
Though I am fully aware I am a beginner to street photography and my shots might be totally overdone clichés, this video nevertheless shows the creative process behind my first attempt at a simple but effective street photography technique that seemed to have worked well for me.
“The one thing you learn is when you can step out of your comfort zone and be uncomfortable, you see what you're made of and who you are.”
