Medical Science Consultants are an educational resource for providers in interpretation of VAP Lipid Panel results, lipoprotein physiology and pathophysiology, clinical implications and treatment options, resulting in a better understanding of risk and treatment selection.
The Vertical Auto Profile (VAP®) Lipid Panel is the most comprehensive Lipid Panel that reveals residual risk and complies with all of the guidelines, enabling personalized treatment strategies and improved health outcomes.
Hello, my name's Kenneth French. I'm a Medical Science Consultant at Atherotech, and we provide cholesterol tests. The purpose of this video is to give you an understanding of what the VAP test is, and primarily also why does it exist. Before we get into the VAP test itself though, it's important to kind of take a snapshot of where we are in the U. S. with regard to stroke, heart disease and diabetes. Those are the largest problems that we face as a population.
Physicians use what's called the basic lipid profile or the basic cholesterol test. This test actually uses total cholesterol and HDL. It has patients fast, and uses triglycerides. It estimates the No. 1 of therapy that we're trying to lower which is LDL cholesterol. The problem though is this equation was developed in 1972. If you think about that, that means it's over 40 years old.
The problem now is that the population has changed so much in the last 40 years, but we've never once changed the fundamental test that we use to try to diagnose and determine who needs these particular medications that we have to address their concern.
With the No. 1 problem in the United States being cardiovascular disease, stroke, and diabetes, the epidemic of what we call metabolic syndrome, which are the precursors or the features that we see in diabetics, insulin resistant, all of these conditions, and we're using the test that's 40 years old to determine who needs therapy and who doesn't. Now you can better understand and appreciate why Atherotech, when it started in 1999, came on board to try to figure out a way to resolve some of these issues.
We've got plenty of medications, but patients aren't on them. Why? Because their routine test, their basic lipid profile says, "You're fine. You're not at risk," when in fact they are. What is VAP? Well, it stands for Vertical Auto Profile. And this is the technique that utilizes ultracentrifugation in its process, and understand that ultracentrifugation is the very technique that described the whole field of lipidology way back in the 1940s and '50s.
First and foremost, what the VAP also does is it's accurate. Remember when I spoke to you earlier, I talked about how the standard lipid panel or the basic lipid profile has significant mathematical limitation, and the patient types can't even take the tests because they have high triglycerides or they're on a drug that increases their trig or some kind of corporal steroid or something like that. Well, with the VAP it doesn't matter.
In fact, this test is accurate in non-fasting results. So the beauty is these results are accurate. That's the most important reason and the primary reason to be using the VAP test. If LDL is the primary target of therapy, then we should be measuring it, not estimating it. So that said, the second reason to use the VAP is because we can characterize risk. No two LDLs that are the same are equal in risk. And so, by exploding the lipids into their characteristic components, immediately you begin to see, "Aha! This person has a high genetic risk because of an abnormality we see. Or this person has a high metabolic risk because of an abnormality we see."
We all know someone personally who's been devastated by the disease or more importantly, you yourself are going through this process. So as a result, Atherotech's goal is to provide each and every patient with the best test that's available on the market today at a very affordable price, such that they can get the care and attention that they need to be able to prevent a heart attack or prevent a second one. And that's what we're in the business of doing.
