    Kindergarten: Recognize and produce a steady beat. Singing action songs. Be an attentive audience member. Demonstrate patterns. Songs from a variety of cultures. Move creatively to music.

    Grade 1: Playing instruments. Recognizing repeat (:) signs. Creating sound effects with music.

    Grade 2: Reading and performing whole, half, quarter and eight notes. Recognize 4/4 time signatures. Improvising on drums.

    Grade 3: Reading, writing and performing rhythms incorporating the eighth rest. Distinguishing between major and minor songs. The exercise is in A minor. Do improvise section on Orff instruments.

    Grade 4: Reading, writing and performing rhythms incorporating sixteenth notes and syncopations. Try playing the song on recorders.

    Grade 5: Create your own performance in groups. Perform the Orff arrangement. Visit www.garthprince.com/resources for a copy of the score.

    Grade 6: Poll students for their suggested song genre. The answer is: It was an African drumming exercise to which a hip-hop beat was added. Say the rhythms again and have students write them out. Show less
